Can you clarify is the question is about vSphere Replication or some other product? I'm not aware of "vSphere Replicator" product name.
Can you please also post a link to the documentation you are referring?
vSphere Replication operates on individual disks of a VM and is storage agnostic. It does not operate on datastore level snapshots or similar.
SRM when using array-based replication and using a specific SRA can operate on datastore revel.
