Re: Speccing Out a New ESXi 5 Server

Remember that VMware is handling the management of physical resources. In your example if you have 2 sockets with 4 cores VMware will list it as 8 processors available. That doesn't mean if you assign 2vCPUs to a VM that you only have 6 left and then you 'run out'.

VMware is providing slices of time on the physical hardware for all of your VM's to run on.

As best practice we always start off our VM's with the least amount of resources and only increase the vCPUs and/or memory if needed. If you are running Windows 2008 or higher it has no trouble adjusting to the CPU/Memory changes. That way you are not assigning more resources that is actually needed. Many physical servers have way more resources than they need to begin with and replicating that in a VM environment is wasteful in my opinion.

Thanks a lot for the quick replies!

@: Sorry, the old esxserver is a standalone Server, not in a cluster like the new one. The new 5.1 Cluster consists of two esxserver is in the same network but not i cant manage it with vCenter Server and so on. Thats why i cant use the migration function.

@: You mean, that an old task could be the reason why the new task doesnt work? I'll have a try, so i will uninstall the converter and reinstall it.

Do You have somewhere any checklist with permissions?

Here is a Powercli script to set VM bootdelay option

We had over 700 Vms that we wanted to set a 5 second boot delay option to give people the option to enter the VM bios or BOOT Order FN keys before booting the guest OS. So I rushed together this script. It will look at powered on VMs only and you can point it to a cluster or it defaults to all VMs in vcenter and will set the option. You need PowerCLI

I've never actually expanded a VMFS volume before.  That is creating an extent?

You can use extents or grow the volume - depends on which versions you are working with. What do you have?

Exactly,  it is a common error.  it is always recommended to clean up the source server if the conversion has failed or been stopped previously

You gave the machine a new name in VMware during the cloning process but that has nothing to do with the Windows hostname.

Austin is correct when you powered those up they superceded the physical ones in active directory hence you cannot login via the domain anymore on the old machines.

Get your old physical machines working again be re-joining the domain. Then clone. Before you power on the clone remove the network adapters from it so it can't talk on the network and screw up the running machine.

Power it on, sysprep, rename the machine and join it to a workgroup.

Then re-add the virtual NIC, power it ON, provide a new IP and join to domain.  ----This is assuming you want to keep the old and new machines on the network at the same time.

The YouTube video appears to deal with Windows. The problem is with the host, not the guests.

It is a Dell monitor. It is a rack mount KVM. I have power cycled the monitor and have auto-sync'd the monitor also.

I have two hosts and one works fine, but the other just stopped working.

Needs to take database backup of the vCenter Server

Team,

I would like to take database backup of the my vCenter Server.

Currently am running with the default database that comes with the vCenter during installation.

I did just that, I put them in workgroups then rejoined the domain. I deleted the cloned ones and will sysprep them from the get go when I clone the production ones.

Workstation - Bat File to start multiple Virtual Machines

I am currently using the following bat file to start multiple virtual machines:

     start ""/b "C:\Users\Abe\Desktop\Virtual machine 1.lnk"

     start ""/b "C:\Users\Abe\Desktop\Virtual machine 2.lnk"

My problem is that this start each machine in is own instance of VMware.  Is there any way to build a script (.bat or otherwise) that will start the virtual machines in a single instance of VMware Workstation.

Regards and thanks in advance

There is no need to do a full reconvert on those guest,  just move into a dummy domain,  Then add it back to the correct domain, if these guests have different Computer names then they will add to the domain as new member servers, as side effect of this is that they will get a New Domain SID too.

If as I supect they actually have not got a new computer name then you will need to run sysprep on the two guests to make them unique. this will change the local SID, and Computer name, then once complete. re add them to the domain.

ok cool.  I'll check it out.

Of course this is a replicated volume, so I would most likely need to stop that, increase both sides then re-establish replication...
